Troy Area Woman Pleased with Robot-Assisted Surgery

TROY (January 2, 2015) - A Troy-area resident, Compton was among the first patients of Christopher Grove, M.D., to undergo robot-assisted surgery for gall bladder problems.

“It was amazing. I recovered from it quickly,” Compton said of the surgery in summer 2014. “I was back on my feet fairly quickly; back to doing all my household chores that I didn’t feel like doing before.”

Compton, who moved to Miami County more than a year ago from Springfield, said recurring issues with becoming ill and not being able to eat, sent her to her family physician.

The gall bladder was suspected and, following an ultrasound, she was sent to Miami County Surgeons, where she met with Dr. Grove.

“He went over exactly how they would do it with the doctor at the machine moving the robotics. He just told us so plainly how it was going to be done, it put all of us at ease,” she said.

When Dr. Grove mentioned the option of robotic surgery, Compton said she asked if a robot was going to do her surgery. “He said, ‘not really,’” she said, adding the surgeon then explained how the robot’s tools allow for more fine point work, but the surgeon runs the tools.

“I had the surgery, and there were no complications. I have three tiny scars; that’s it,” she said.

Compton said it was difficult to compare her robotic-assisted surgery with the traditional surgeries she previously underwent, mostly because of the difference in the type of procedure, such as a knee replacement.

“I would absolutely recommend this robotic surgery, and I would recommend Dr. Grove,” she said. “There is so much new technology now. It is incredible how they have advanced.”
