Interventional Radiology

Interventional radiology procedures are targeted, minimally-invasive treatments that use imaging for guidance. Benefits of interventional radiology procedures over traditional surgery include:

  • Smaller incisions
  • Less risk
  • Less pain
  • Reduced length of stay in the hospital
  • Shorter recovery times

Interventional radiologists insert small catheters and instruments through your arteries and veins, allowing them to perform a variety of complex diagnostic and interventional procedures. They incorporate image guidance to help them navigate and provide treatment, typically using CT, fluoroscopy, ultrasound, or MRI.

Arterial Interventions

Arterial interventions are outpatient procedures that treat arterial blockage caused by peripheral artery disease. Physicians use arterial stenting and balloon angioplasty to improve blood flow in arteries for issues such as leg pain and foot ulcers.

Dialysis Access

Our team offers:

  • Dialysis catheters – Placement of dialysis catheters for patients who have kidney failure and require hemodialysis
  • Fistulogram and intervention – Evaluation and treatment for problematic arteriovenous fistulas or grafts.

Neurointerventional 24:7 Care

Our neurointerventional radiologists offer minimally-invasive technologies around the clock to treat patients with vascular problems due to brain, spinal cord, head, or neck disorders. This includes strokes, aneurysms, and other neuro emergencies.

Oncology Interventional Radiology

Minimally-invasive procedures performed for the treatment of various cancers include:

  • Radiofrequency ablation – An outpatient procedure used to treat tumors by heating and destroying cancer cells locally.
  • Cryoablation – An outpatient procedure that kills and destroys cancer cells by freezing them.
  • NanoKnife® – An outpatient procedure used to treat inoperable tumors using localized electric currents.
  • Y-90 Radioembolization – Treatment of various cancers within the liver using internal radiation, delivered through the arterial supply to the liver.
  • Chemoembolization – Chemotherapy directed to liver tumors via the arterial supply.

Venous Interventions

Minimally-invasive procedures performed to treat venous disease include:

  • IVC filter placement and removal – A filter is placed in the inferior vena cava to prevent blood clots from moving from the legs to the lungs.
  • Leg vein blood clots – Performed with clot-removing medications and devices.
  • Treatment of lower extremity vein reflux – Chronic venous insufficiency of the legs can cause chronic swelling, discoloration, and ultimately ulcerations. Our interventional radiologists provide venous closure techniques to prevent blood reflux through these abnormal leg veins.

Vertebroplasty

Vertebroplasty is an outpatient procedure that treats back pain from vertebral body compression fractures.

Additional Procedures

  • Venous access – Placement of PICC lines, central lines, and central venous ports.
  • Enteric access – For patients who are unable to eat, tubes can be placed within the bowel for feeding. These procedures include gastrostomy tubes, gastrojejunostomy tubes, and jejunostomy tubes.
  • Image-guided tissue biopsy – A needle biopsy or sample of tissue obtained from a mass or other abnormal condition in the body to obtain diagnosis.
  • Drainage procedures – These procedures include placement of drainage catheters to remove fluid from a body cavity such as the abdomen (paracentesis), or the area around your lungs (thoracentesis), and other abscesses.
  • Urologic procedures – Nephrostomy tubes and ureteral stents are placed for obstructed kidneys.
  • Biliary procedures – Biliary drainage tubes and stents are placed for biliary obstruction.
