Concussion Management Program
Upper Valley Medical Center’s Concussion Management Program is dedicated to the comprehensive treatment of concussions.
As more athletes are getting into the game, concussions are a growing concern for players, coaches, and families. We implement the latest therapies to treat concussions, including ImPACT testing, and focus on graduated return to normal activity.
Objective Concussion Evaluation
ImPACT is a software tool that allows physicians and athletic trainers to objectively evaluate an athlete who has sustained a concussion. Through ImPACT, athletes are cleared to return to their sport once their test results indicate that it is safe.
The ImPACT concussion management program is designed for any junior high, high school, or collegiate athlete. It is also being used on a national scale in more than 800 high schools, 200 universities, and with many professional baseball, hockey, and soccer teams.
Pre-season/pre-concussion tests are available at Upper Valley Medical Center Sports Medicine. When an athlete sustains a concussion, the post-concussion tests are given within 24 to 72 hours, and every three-to-five days after until the test results indicate it is safe for the athlete to return to play. A board-certified sports medicine physician at Upper Valley Medical Center performs the testing and interpretation. If pre-season testing has not been performed on an athlete, the post-concussion test results can be compared to a national database.
The ImPACT test takes 20 minutes and measures multiple aspects of cognitive functioning, including memory, reaction time, and processing speed.
Premier Health has several physicians who are ImPACT-credentialed, as well as athletic trainers who are trained in evaluating and recognizing the signs and symptoms of a concussion. Our physicians and staff follow a standard protocol in returning athletes and active individuals to their sport or active lifestyle.
