UVMC CEO Announces Leadership Change for 2009
David J. Meckstroth, chief executive officer (CEO) of Upper Valley Medical Center (UVMC), has announced his intent to step down from that position effective Jan. 2, 2009 , to pursue consulting and teaching. Meckstroth started with the UVMC system in December 1980 and held a variety of positions before being promoted to president and CEO in September 1994.
“I would like to thank all individuals that are part of UVMC for their high level of dedication and efforts. UVMC has great people throughout the system, and it has been most rewarding to work with them,” Meckstroth said. “UVMC has realized many successes through the years, and all of those are a result of the terrific individuals within our system.”
“We are extremely grateful to David for his exceptional leadership and dedication to our local health system. UVMC has evolved into an outstanding healthcare provider under his leadership,” said Peter E. Nims, M.D., chairman of the UVMC Board of Directors.
“Among the many successes achieved with David at the helm was the move to the new, consolidated hospital and blending of two work forces into a strong, cohesive, quality and service-oriented culture,” Dr. Nims said. “That achievement was an important step for the future of continued high quality healthcare in our communities.”
Dr. Nims added that another significant accomplishment achieved under Meckstroth’s leadership was integration of UVMC into the Premier Health Partners network earlier this year. “The Premier affiliation has opened up opportunity for mutual benefits and helps position us to be able to fulfill our mission over the long term,” he noted.
Thomas G. Breitenbach, CEO of Premier, said, “I have known David for more than 20 years and have always held him in high regard. Under his leadership, Upper Valley has become known as a strong organization with an excellent reputation as a quality healthcare provider.”
Michael J. Maiberger, UVMC president, will assume the additional role of CEO when Meckstroth steps down. Maiberger joined UVMC in the role of hospital administrator in 1992, was promoted to chief operating officer (COO) in 1994, executive vice president/COO in 1998 and president/COO in November 2007.
