NAMI Honors Rafay Atiq, MD, Exemplary Psychiatrist
Rafay Atiq, MD, Medical Director for Dettmer Outpatient Services, was one of 30 psychiatrists in the United States honored as an "Exemplary Psychiatrist" by the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI).
The award carries a special distinction because honorees are nominated by people they have helped. The young patient who nominated Dr. Atiq praised the care and treatment that Dr. Atiq had administered. The nominator stated jubilantly, "I have never felt better."
Dr. Atiq acknowledged humbly, "I try my best." He said it is a privilege and honor to be part of this community in which he can provide the care and treatment people with mental illness need.
Joanne Mieding from Miami County NAMI said the annual "Exemplary Psychiatrist Award" recognizes psychiatrists who have "gone the extra mile" in providing excellent clinical care, educating family members and the public, and helping to reduce stigma surrounding mental illness. They have worked alongside NAMI in their communities as advocates for research, social services, insurance parity, and other needs. She confirmed that NAMI is highly involved in education, support, research, and advocacy.
Dr. Atiq and his colleagues were honored at the annual conference of the American Psychiatric Association, held in Washington DC in May, Mental Health Month.
