The Upper Valley Medical Center (UVMC) Employee Assistance Program is a professional consultation and counseling service available in the workplace for employees, managers and employers.

As a hospital-based, not-for-profit EAP organization, we are highly committed to providing outstanding services geared to maintaining thriving work forces and healthy, safe workplaces. With our primary office located on the UVMC Campus, we have been offering highly individualized EAP services to companies since 1993. Our EAP responds to the needs of both small businesses and large organizations, both public and private, throughout the Miami Valley. In addition, we provide services at a number of locations throughout the State of Ohio and nationally as well.

The professional staff of the UVMC EAP possess an impressive combination of skills that uniquely qualifies them as EAP professionals and clinicians. All of the counseling staff affiliated with our EAP are, at a minimum, master's prepared in various fields of counseling, are licensed within the state they practice, and certified (CEAP) through the Employee Assistance Profession AssociationOff Site Icon.  Individual staff members have over 20 years experience in private practice, EAP, mental health counseling, substance abuse counseling and mediation.

Employer Services

UVMC EAP provides the following components essential for a quality employee assistance program:

  • Counseling is provided by our licensed, certified clinicians.  Assessment, evaluations, counseling, coaching and case management are all services we offer to individuals, couples, families and employees. The services are voluntary, confidential and provided in a timely manner.
  • Consultation with EAP staff augments your organization's existing management tools to deal with employees with problems. The consultation service is available to supervisors, managers, human resources staff, or any other key people in your organization responding to problematic work situations.
  • Training, on-site or off-site, provides supervisors and managers with tools to recognize warning signs of employee problems and supervisory skills necessary for good communication and leadership. We offer a wide range of topics on concerns that impact the workplace, from team-building to substance abuse to workplace violence. In addition, a monthly EAP supervisor newsletter assists in providing ongoing skill development.
  • Education includes an array of wellness in-services to your employees that can be tailored to meet your work force's specific needs. Stress management, dealing with difficult people, financial health and time management are all examples of services we can provide on-site to your employees. We also supply a monthly employee newsletter addressing many relevant wellness topics.  Informative EAP brochures, posters, and on-site or DVD/VHS EAP orientation sessions are provided as well.
  • Substance abuse assessments, counseling, case management and training for employees who self refer to our EAP or who test positive under your company's drug free workplace policy are a key component.
  • Crisis debriefing and defusing following an event likely to cause acute stress to the organization's work force or specific employees are provided on or off-site. Examples of the need for such intervention would include an accident or violence in the workplace resulting in serious injury or death.

With the UVMC EAP, you or your family members can obtain confidential assessment, short-term counseling, and referral services for a wide range of problems. You can turn to a single source for professional assistance with many concerns such as:

Counseling and Problem Resolution

If short-term counseling is appropriate, you will have the opportunity to participate in counseling with your EAP counselor. The sessions include the assessment phase, counseling, and problem resolution strategies that are specific to your needs and concerns.  

Referral and Linkage

If more intensive counseling or specialized treatment is needed, the EAP counselor will assist you in getting the best continued treatment for the problem through a provider in your insurance network or other community resources.

1.  What is an Employee Assistance Program?

Very simply, it is just what it sounds like, assistance to employees. This program provides confidential assistance to help employees and their families resolve problems that affect their personal lives or potentially interfere with job performance.

 2.  Why is a program like this needed?

Your employer provides an EAP to their employees because it's good business and because they care about their employees. Each of us, regardless of our position in the organization, faces a variety of problems in our daily lives. Usually, we can work them out. Sometimes our problems become too much for us to handle and they affect our personal happiness, our family relations, our performance at work, and even our health. When this occurs, we often need professional help in resolving them. Without proper attention, these problems usually become worse and the consequences are often unpleasant and expensive.

3.  How does the EAP work?

The EAP is a professional counseling service that specializes in finding solutions for employees whose personal problems may interfere with work. Here is how the program works:

  • The employee or family member makes a request for help by calling the EAP.
  • Call the EAP at (937) 440-7263 or 1-800-447-8292, identify yourself as an employee, and indicate you desire to make an appointment or talk with a counselor. Confidentiality will be assured.  If you want to set up a consultation and you receive the EAP voice mail, you may leave a message with your name, the company you work for and a number where we can contact you. We will get back to you within the business day.
  • Discussion of the problem is strictly between you and the counselor. Neither management nor your co-workers will have any knowledge of your request for help.
  • The counselor will work with you to identify solutions to your problems while you continue to work.
  • The program is voluntary, designed to allow the employee or family member to seek help on his or her own.
  • If an employee is uncomfortable with a face-to-face visit, a telephone session can be conducted.

4. Who will pay for the cost of counseling?

The cost of EAP services is free. Your employer paid for this benefit. You now have the option of using the EAP services. There may be times, however, when an employee will require a specialized service outside of the EAP.  The employee's health insurance may be used to cover that cost according to the terms of coverage. Your EAP counselor will assist you with the process if you are in need of referral services.

5.  Does the EAP cover my family?

Yes, since an employee's personal well-being and work performance can be affected by the problems of a spouse or dependent, this program is made available to the family.

6.  How is confidentiality protected?

Confidentiality is guaranteed! Every counseling service is required by state laws to protect a person's "right to privacy" (there are a few exceptions). The EAP guarantees confidentiality in the following ways:

  • We encourage voluntary access that doesn't require you to notify employer.
  • Appointments are made outside your work hours to prevent missed work.
  • Reports regarding the use of the service are made without any identifying information (i.e. names, ID numbers, titles, etc.).
  • Information regarding your involvement with the EAP will not be disclosed without your written authorization to do so.
