April 2011 Employee of the Month

A co-worker describes Kari Foster as a “shining example of Caring Plus at UVMC.”

In recognition of her contributions and approach to her work, Kari, a certified medical assistant in the Cancer Care Center/Infusion Services, is the April 2011 Employee of the Month.

In her role, Kari said she might be described as a “jack of all trades.”  An employee of UVMC since April 2008, she assists nurses; schedules appointments; registers infusion patients and ensures documentation is proper; answers phones; and assists with checking patients in and out at the front desk, among other tasks.

“Kari is always very compassionate and all of our patients come first for her at all times.

She is always positive and keeps our patients aware of any delays or changes in their care,” a nominator said. “She is always very good in explaining procedures being done to the patient and answering their questions.”  Kari also was complimented on her treatment of coworkers.

She said she loves interacting with the patients and their families. “The patients are going through a very difficult and scary time; sometimes all they need is someone to listen to them or give a hug,” Kari said.  “They are so strong, resilient really. And I hope that I can at least help make it a positive experience for them, to let them know that they aren’t alone in this process and that we want to help them in every way possible to get through this.”  When not at work, Kari enjoys spending time with her husband, Maurice, and children, Isaac, Allison and Grant.
