When you come to a Premier Health emergency center for care, you get quick access to advanced treatment from specialists and surgeons in a wide variety of specialties.

Each of our emergency centers maintains a direct connection to the Level I Trauma Center at Miami Valley Hospital. If you need the highest level of lifesaving or trauma care, CareFlight Air and Mobile Services will transport you right away.

To help meet the unique needs of seniors, our emergency rooms have all achieved Geriatric Emergency Department Accreditation. This distinction means we provide the necessary expertise, equipment and personnel to ensure optimal care for older adults.

What To Bring With You

You or a loved one can speed care delivery in the emergency room by bringing along your health information, such as medicines you take.

This data is not necessary for care. If you registered for MyChart, the information may already be in your electronic health record.

If possible, try to bring:

  • List of all current medications, including over-the-counter drugs, herbal remedies and supplements
  • List of dosages, when they are taken and the last dose taken
  • Primary care physician’s name
  • List of known allergies and medication reactions
  • List of surgeries
  • List of medical conditions
  • Telephone numbers of family, friends or next of kin
  • Pharmacy name, telephone number and location
  • Social security card
  • Insurance card

What To Expect

When you arrive at the emergency room, a nurse will assess (triage) the severity of your condition. The goal is to ensure that patients with urgent medical conditions are seen right away.

The nurse will evaluate your:

  • Vital signs
  • Medical complaints
  • Information you provide about past medical problems and allergies

Once your immediate condition is known, an emergency medicine doctor will:

  • Review your medical history
  • Perform an exam or evaluation
  • Order tests if needed
  • Make a diagnosis
  • Begin treatment
  • Consult with other specialists or your family doctor

Many tests and treatments are available in the emergency area. This saves time.

Once you are stabilized and emergency treatment is provided, your doctor will decide whether to admit you to the hospital or send you home with instructions for follow-up care.

If You Are Admitted To the Hospital

If you need specialized care and are admitted to the hospital, our goal is to move you to a hospital room as quickly as possible so that you are more comfortable and treatment or additional testing can begin.

Intensive care unit (ICU). If you need intensive care and constant monitoring, you may be admitted to the ICU. Premier Health ICUs use a patient-centered team approach.

Hospitalists. Hospitalists are doctors who work in hospitals at all times to monitor your care if you are admitted to the hospital. Hospitalists follow your care in coordination with your primary care doctors. This provides seamless, coordinated care.

When You Are Discharged

When you are ready to leave the hospital, your doctor or nurse will:

  • Give you any prescriptions the doctor ordered
  • Review a set of written discharge instructions
  • Answer your questions
  • Describe any recommended follow-up care

It is very important that you understand and follow these instructions. If anything is unclear, tell the doctor or nurse.

If you get home and have questions or concerns, please call your doctor or the emergency department you visited.
