Inpatient Rehabilitation Program

The UVMC Inpatient Rehabilitation Unit is under the medical direction of a physiatrist, and consists of an 11-bed unit with a full complement of interdisciplinary team members.

Services are provided in a coordinated and integrated manner that includes evaluation and treatment, and stresses the importance of education and training of patients served and their families.

The program is designed to assist individuals, 18 years of age and older, with neuromusculoskeletal impairment and psychosocial limitations which render them dependent and unable to return to their previous roles or activity.

Conditions Treated

Functional problems may include mobility, self-care, bowel/bladder function, cognitive or perceptual function, communication and safety. Patient diagnoses and conditions include, but are not limited to: cerebral vascular accident, amputation, hip fractures, joint replacements, brain injury and other neurological brain disorders, spinal cord injury, congenital deformity, major multiple trauma, specific arthritic conditions, and burns.

The program is applicable to patients who have functional limitations of recent onset, recent regression or progression, or who have not had rehabilitation for the same problem under the same conditions.

The goal is to optimize independence in the abilities needed by patients and families for adequate functioning in their living environment. Discharge planning is initiated at admission and updated throughout the patient’s stay.
