Piqua Pink Out Benefits Cancer Care

Two Piqua High School students’ project to raise a couple hundred dollars for the UVMC Cancer Care Center got totally out of control. But, no one’s complaining.

The “Pink Out” organized by senior Heidi Strevell and friend senior Conner Brown for last October’s Homecoming game at Piqua stadium ended up generating $1,600. 

“It kind of got a lot bigger than I thought it would be,” Strevell said while presenting the Pink Out’s proceeds March 21 to Jean Heath, director of the UVMC Cancer Care Center.

They ended up selling more than 600 pink long-sleeved T-shirts to students and adults and garnering support for the Cancer Care Center project with added offerings such as a balloon release and a visit to the game by the pink fire truck from Huber Heights.

“The stands were full of pink that night,” Heath said. “I was so proud of them, that they would do this for the community.”

The money will be used solely in the UVMC Cancer Care Center for the needs of  breast cancer patients. 

Plans already are being made for the return of the Pink Out at the 2014 Homecoming game as a new senior project, the students said.

“It is going to be really big next year,” Brown said, adding helping others through the project was “amazing.”

“It is such a good feeling knowing you are doing something for other people,” Strevell added.
